There are many ways you can benchmark your iPhone. The iPhone is a very speedy little piece of electronics. There are a lot of things that it can do relatively well if you just give it the right amount of tuning. I think that the iPhone is best used in cool environments. Thankfully, if you have jailbreak ipod touch you can run a variety of diagnostic programs on it to test out the speed of the iPod Touch which is essentially an iPhone without the phone part of the device and it has much of the same hardware anyways except for a faster processor on the 2G.
