Teaching Your Dog To Heel

If you like to take your dog on regular walks (and as a dog owner, you really should take your dog on walks regularly!) then knowing how to teach your dog to heel is key to having an enjoyable time.

Does your dog always pull on the leash when you’re out walking? Then teaching your dog to heel is also the key to fixing this problem.

Start with your dog on your left side, and hold a treat in your hand. Show your dog the treat by holding it in front of him but don’t let him have it just yet. Say the command “heel” as you start walking forward.

The basic idea is to use the treat to keep him walking to heel, he will soon learn to associate walking to heel with getting a treat and lavish praise from you – which is the key to many aspects of dog training.
