The western Iowa tourism region overlays almost exactly the part of the state with the biggest pheasant population. It is thought that the birds do so well in the region for several reasons. Part of it has to being so close to the Missouri river which provides food for a lot of the animals that would normally take after the pheasant chicks. Another factor is that the river gives protection as it is a well known fact that tornados will not cross a large body of water such as a river. This keeps the worst part of the storm from taking the lives of as much wildlife as it normally would.
